Choosing more aggressive commitment contracts for others than for the self

Abstract Commitment contracts are a strategy for binding self-control failures, such as skipping gym visit or breaking dieting regime, to monetary penalties. Despite evidence that commitment with stronger penalties improve self-control, they relatively underused. Across 5 experiments, we find decision makers less likely select more severe (i.e., anti-charity contracts) themselves than others. This self-other difference in contract choice arises because believe will be effective others themselves. Our results suggest people recognize the potential effectiveness of using aggressive overcome problems, but view an exception general rule.
